A Note from the Editor As listed in the preliminary program for the 2001 annual meeting, sociology of education sessions abound throughout the program www.asanet.org. In addition to "regular" sessions, section-sponsored sessions and roundtables are scheduled for Saturday, August 18. Please plan to stay for our business meeting, held in the same location of the section roundtables at 11:30 AM. Our section's reception will be held at 6:30 PM on Saturday. Please join us for our annual section dinner, which will be held on Sunday, August 19 at the Citrus City Grille in Old Town Orange, CA (see page 6 for further information). Please note that this is scheduled for the day following the section roundtables and reception. Finally, we are pleased to announce the election results for new council chair and council members. For what I believe is the first time in Sociology of Education section history, Karen Bradley and David Kinney tied for a seat on the council. Without the need for outside mediation, an amicable resolution was reached: they will serve one-year staggered terms. A Note from the Section Chair You will find a preliminary listing of the SOE Section's roundtables and panels plus the ASA panels on SOE in this newsletter. Putting the program together has been both a heartening and challenging experience. It has been a great pleasure to read over 120 papers on SOE. The high quality and diversity of topics among these makes me proud to be Chair of such a vibrant community of scholars making important intellectual contributions to the understanding of education in society. At the same time, it has been a real task to put the program together. With the crucial collaboration of David Karen and Katherine McClelland (the ASA panel organizers) plus Inga-Dora Sigfusdottir (my RA), we have developed nine panel sessions (4 section panels--our limit, and 5 ASA panels--David's crafty negotiation with the ASA won these) and twenty roundtables, hence placing over 100 papers in the program! Remaining papers went to numerous other organizers who used them in other parts of the program. In doing this, there were four goals that we kept in sight. First, we wanted to include as many scholars' work as we could, hence we tracked SOE papers to the ends of the earth through various second choices to make sure that if they were not included there, we developed a place for them on our program. Second, in order to integrate young scholars into our field, we tried to get new faces on the program as much as possible in various roles from presenter to discussant. Third, we developed the panels around topics that reflected trends in topics covered in the full field of submitted papers (there are simply too many high quality papers to make a quality distinction between panel and roundtables). Lastly, we tried to add a little of our own view of the field to the mix. We may not have been able to accomplish these as much as we would have liked, but we sure tried. We hope you enjoy the Section-ASA SOE program. A few last notes of advice on this for the future. One, it is crucial that the Section's Chair and the person selected for the ASA panels work together. David and Katherine made this easy for me, and it has real payoffs. Two, let's all try to submit electronically through the ASA, it makes the job of paper tracking much more manageable than by hardcopy. Lastly, let us be open to experiment with new ways to share our substantial amount of annual work with each other (Karl Alexander and a committee are developing a trial run of a poster session for the 2002 ASA).
