Message from the section

Dear Section on Marxist Sociology Members and Visitors,

Welcome to the new webpage for the Marxist Section of the American Sociological Association designed by the Section’s new Webmasters/Newsletter Editors Hannah Holleman and R. Jonna. This webpage is designed to give the latest information on the Marxist Section and to be a connecting link for its members and also between the section and all others. We intend to make the webpage as interesting, useful, and dynamic as possible.

For those of you who are new to the Section, the membership of the Marxist Sociological Section is interested in examining how insights from Marxist methodology and Marxist analysis can help explain the complex dynamics of modern society in all its dimensions: political, economic, military, cultural, even interpersonal. You don't have to "be a Marxist" to be a member of the Section, though most of the membership consists of those who embrace Marxian and critical theory perspectives.

The webpage will have links to those exploring Marxist theory, methodology, and praxis from a variety of perspectives around the world. A new newsletter for the section is being designed, and we will soon be requesting contributions from Section members. The newsletter will be posted on the webpage. Archives of previous newsletters are to be found here as well.

Don’t miss the opportunity to participate in the discussion group of the section, which was restarted on May 23rd and has been carrying on vital discussions on such issues as how to help graduate students, new Ph.D.s, and junior faculty navigate the tempests that confront Marxist sociologists in particular; contemporary approaches to class; and Marxism and organization theory. We hope that the discussion group will be an important forum for section members. (Information on how to join the discussion group, which is voluntary for members, is included on this webpage.)

Don’t forget to let us know what you think! You may write to Hannah or Jonna (see under Comments).

            Yours in Solidarity and Scholarship,

John Bellamy Foster
Past Chair and member, Section on Marxist Sociology, American Sociological Association
