Announcement: Mailing List for Social Movements Theory

Social Movements: a new Internet mailing list

Social movements, popular protest, collective action, counter-cultures, and similar phrases define an important area of social and political thinking created by both academics and activists. This new moderated mailing list provides an international space for discussion and information for those interested in contributing to or following contemporary debates on the subject.

The content of the mailing list is provisionally defined as follows:

    * Academic theory and theoretically relevant research on social movements and cognate areas, such as the study of alternative media, cultural studies as related to social movements, the analysis of political subcultures, and so on;

    * Theories developed from and for social movements, such as Marxism, feminism, Green political thought and anarchism, to the extent that they discuss problems of collective agency, movement politics, etc. (excluding e.g. general analyses of the structure and problems of contemporary society);

    * Information on new publications, information sources, conferences and congresses likely to be of international interest.

The volume of messages is expected to be of the order of 10 - 20 messages per day, with a focus on discussion and exchange of information between different theoretical positions and areas of interest. It is hoped that reviews and discussion of new work in this area will be a particular strong point.
