Maureen Reindl Benjamins ('05)

Maureen is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Texas at Austin. She received her undergraduate degree from Duke University in 1998 and her Masters degree in Sociology from UT-Austin in 2001. While at UT, she spent three years as a National Institute of Child Health and Development trainee and has also worked as a research assistant at the Population Research Center. In addition, she is participating in the University Gerontology Portfolio Program. Her research focuses on the social determinants of health behaviors and outcomes, particularly within the elderly population. Her current work examines the influence of religious involvement on preventive health care utilization and attitudes towards health care. This project has been funded by a research grant from the Society for the ScientificStudy of Religion and the University of Texas Continuing Fellowship.


Shalon Irving ('06)

Shalon Irving is a doctoral student at Purdue University in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology; she is also pursuing a minor in Gerontology. In 2002, she received her Bachelor’s from Hampton University and in 2004 she earned her Master’s of Science at Purdue University. Shalon is currently an ASA National Institute of Mental Health Minority Fellowship recipient and has been awarded the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE) Emerging Scholars Award. Her research interests focus on the early determinants of adult health. Currently, she is working on projects examining the long term health consequences of parental death and child abuse.


Graduate Student Paper Award

Papers authored or coauthored soley by students are eligible. Faculty coauthors render papers ineligible. Unpublished, under review, accepted, or published papers are eligible. If published, the paper should have appeared within the past two calendar years (e.g., a paper nominated in 2005 may have been published anytime during 2003 or 2004). Self nominations are encouraged! All nominations are due by June 1st.

The award consists of $250 presented to the winner at the Business Meeting of Section, held during the annual ASA meeting in August of each year. Only one award will be given, although dual awards for a jointly authored paper is possible. Click here for more information.
