Ethel Shanas Perlman (1915 ­ 2005)


Longtime gerontology researcher, Ethel Shanas, passed away in Janaury 2005 at the age of 90 in Evanston, Il. She served as a professor of sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 1996 to 1982. She was president of the Gerontological Society in 1974, the year which saw legislation passed to create the National Institute on Aging. She received the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Section on Aging and the Life Course in 1987.
