Prominent Sociologists Who Have Recently Passed Away

The following sociologists have died in recent months (listed in order of recency of death). This is not an exhaustive list; readers should also consult the death notices in the announcements section of Footnotes newsletter. Watch for obituaries of the more recently deceased in upcoming printed or online issues of Footnotes newsletter and check the current or previous issues for older ones. Send death notices to Footnotes and feel free to include in your note suggestions of colleagues or others who you believe would be appropriate authors of an official ASA obituary to be published in Footnotes.

Fred Strodtbeck, passed away peacefully August 7 as the result of heart failure from Parkinson's.

Samih K. Farsoun, American University, died of a heart attack on June 9, 2005, at the age of 68. He was professor emeritus, having retired in 2003.

Linda E. Saltzman, Centers for Disease Control, passed away suddenly on March 8, 2005.

Che Fu-Lee, Catholic Univeristy, died on February 9, 2005. He was Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology and a member of the University's Life Cycle Institute.

Leonard E. (Len) Bloomquist, head of the Department of Sociology at Kansas State University, died February 7, 2005, at his residence outside of Manhattan, Kansas.

Laure M. Sharp, a retired sociologist and past-president of the DC Sociological Association, died of complications from a stroke on February 1 at Potomac Valley Nursing Home in Rockville, MD. She was 83.

John F. Schnabel, formerly of West Virginia University, died on January 31, 2005, in Florida.

William B. Hanson, University of Mary Washington, died on January 31 at his Frederiksburg, Virginia, home from complications stemming from lung cancer.

Ethel Shanas, University of Illinois-Chicago, died on January 20 at the age of 90. She was an expert on aging and the life course.

Fred Buttel, of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, died on January 14, 2005.

Loren Frankel, Shepherd University, died after an automobile accident on December 13, 2004, near Shepherdstown, West Virginia.

Otis Dudley Duncan, University of California-Santa Barbara, passed away in his sleep on November 16 after a long term battle with cancer.

Matilda White Riley died November 14 at her home in Maine. She taught at Rutgers University and formerly directed the behavioral and social science program at the National Institute on Aging. She was also the American Sociological Association President in 1986 and the first ASA Executive Officer.

Coramae Richey Mann, Emerita at Indiana University, died of cancer on October 24, 2004.

Charles Gordon, Carleton University in Ottawa Ontario, passed away on September 28 after battling lung cancer.

Norma Williams, died in Texas on September 11, 2004, of complications follwing a bone marrow transplantation.

Joan Smith, University of Vermont, died on September 10, 2004, of cancer.

Tanis Doe, University of Victoria, died on August 4, 2004, due to a pulmonary embolism.

Morris Goldman, formerly of Gallaudet University, died of heart disease on August 4, 2004, at his home in Washington, DC.

Harriet Searcy Murphy, a retired National Institute of Mental Health social science analyst, died at 87 of renal disease on July 11, 2004, in Potomac, Maryland.

Robert Freed Bales, a pioneer in small-group research and Harvard University Professor Emeritus of social relations, died at age 88 on June 16, 2004, at his home in San Diego, CA.

James J. McKenna, Jr., died on April 18, 2004, at his home. He had bile duct cancer.

Fred B. Silberstein, University of Oklahoma, passed away on March 9, 2004.

Frank Robert Westie, Indiana University-Bloomington, died at his Naples, FL, residence on March 5 at age 82.

Sister Marie Augusta Neal, Emmanuel College, passed away in late February at the age of 82. She is a former recipient of ASA's Distinguished Contribution to Teaching Award.

Joan McCord, Temple University, died on February 23 due to cancer.

Norval Morris, University of Chicago Law School, died February 21.

T. R. Young, Red Feather Institute, died February 15, 2004, in Rochester, MN, after suffering a long illness.

William H. “Bill” Howell died February 12, 2004, after an extended illness.

Margaret (Meg) Stacey, Professor Emerita, Warwick University, United Kingdom, a feminist sociologist and human rights activist, died during the second week of February 2004 from congestive heart failure.

Jacqueline Jackson, Professor Emerita, died on January 24, 2004. She had lived in Shaunee Mission, KS.

Egon Mayer, Brooklyn College-CUNY, died at age 59 on January 20, 2004, at his home in Laurel Hollow, NY.

Mary Jean Creshaw Tully, former president of the National Organization for Women's Legal Defense and Education Fund, died of a heart attack on December 27, 2003, in White Plains Hospital in New York.

John Itsuro Kitsuse passed away on November 27, 2003, in Santa Cruz, CA, after a massive stroke.

Steven Philip Schacht passed away on November 21 after a five-year struggle with colon cancer.

Paolo Donati, Newton M.I. (Milano, Italy), died in a motorcycle accident on November 13.

Ruth Simms Hamilton, director of the African Diaspora Research Project at Michigan State University, was killed in her home on November 11.

Aliza Kolker, George Mason University, died on November 7.

Gordon H. Armbruster died on November 1, 2003, in Peoria, AZ.

Mary Jo Huth, University of Dayton, passed away on October 22, 2003.

Erwin K. Scheuch, University of Cologne (Germany), died of cancer at the age of 75 on October 12.

Paul Burleigh Horton, Western Michigan University, died on October 11 in Sun City, AZ, from complications due to Alzheimers Disease.

Dorothy Jones Jessop died on September 7 at her home in Queens, NY.

Warren Peterson, Director of the Institute for Comunity Studies, in Kansas City, MO, died August 16, 2003, in Prairie Village, KS.

Ronny E. Turner, Colorado State University, died on July 13, 2003.

William J. (Si) Goode died on May 4, 2003.

Beth B. Hess died of a brain tumor at her home in Mt. Hope, New Jersey, April 17, 2003.
