ASA Election Results
- Frances Fox Piven was elected the 98 th ASA President, with Bonnie Thornton Dill elected Vice President for 2007. Over 40 percent of eligible ASA members voted, the highest response rate in over 20 years. See the complete results.
2005 Annual Meeting
- The 2005 Annual Meeting Preliminary Program is now online. The online program is searchable by participant name, session title, or individual presentation title.
- The deadline for registration for program participants and the deadline for changes to the Final Program have been extended until Thursday, June 23, 2005. Program changes should be sent via e-mail to meetings@asanet.org. If you are not on the program, but plan on attending the Annual Meeting, register by July 13 in order to take advantage of significant preregistration discounts.
- ASA continues its tradition of providing innovative services to leaders in the profession through the annual Chair Conference and Directors of Graduate Study Conference, held immediately prior to the ASA Annual Meeting. Add value to your convention experience and professional development! - ASA assists sociologists and prospective employers by sponsoring an Employment Service during each year’s Annual Meeting. If you are looking for a job and want your profile included in the advance mailing to employers, be sure to submit your registration and fees by July 1. Employers interested in the service who want to receive the advance mailing of candidates must register by July 8.
New in the ASA Bookstore: 2005 Directory of Members
- The 2005 ASA Directory of Members is now available through the ASA online bookstore. This directory includes comprehensive information on over 12,000 ASA members, including name, contact address, work telephone number, e-mail address, membership in special sections, degrees held, current position and employer, and up to four areas of specialization. Bachelor's Survey Complete
- Over 1,770 new bachelor's degree recipients completed the first wave of the ASA longitudinal survey, "What Can I Do with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology?” Eight out of 10 told us that they learned how to view society from an alternative or critical perspective. Race, Ethnicity, and the Labor Market
- As part of the Sydney S. Spivack centennial series, "How Race and Ethnicity Matter," the first report showing how race and ethnicity play significant roles in determining job placement and career is now available online.
Two Sociologists Walk Into a Bar . . .
- The Sociologist’s Book of Cartoons, ASA’s collaboration with The New Yorker Cartoon Bank, was featured in the June 5 Washington Post. Richard Morin, in his weekly “Unconventional Wisdom” column, gives a playful and positive review to the volume, which may be ordered in the ASA online bookstore.
