ASR Electronic Review Process

In order to improve the efficiency of the review process, with the author's permission, we send a blinded read-only PDF file version of each submitted manuscript to reviewers as an e-mail attachment. We have adopted this means of communication with reviewers principally to speed up the review process. It also saves our editorial staff time, reduces postal costs, and helps prevent against any papers getting lost in the mail.

MAINTAINING CONFIDENTIALITY

Manuscripts are not provided to reviewers in their original word processing form (e.g., Word or WordPerfect). These programs may retain embedded information on the author. After completely blinding the manuscript and inserting a copyright disclaimer that appears on every page of the manuscript, we convert the file into an Adobe Acrobat PDF file for e-mail distribution to reviewers.

We make every effort to make this a confidential, blinded, peer-review process. We inform each reviewer of the strict policies regarding confidentiality and restricted use of the manuscript and include a notification to this effect on every page of the reviewer's copy of the manuscript as follows:
CONFIDENTIAL REVIEW: IMPORTANT
This electronic manuscript # 00-000 has been provided to you, the reviewer, for the purposes of confidential review only. Manuscripts submitted to American Sociological Review are copyrighted. You must not copy, quote, distribute, or use this manuscript in any way without the permission of the author.

AUTHOR APPROVAL

The author is given the opportunity to say if he or she does not permit us to send the manuscript to reviewers via e-mail. If the author states he or she does not permit this, then the hardcopy manuscript will be sent to the reviewer through the traditional mail process. The author should be aware each reviewer is informed that the policies regarding confidentiality and restricted use of the manuscript must remain in effect.

REVIEWER CHOICE

If a reviewer agrees to review a manuscript, we will e-mail it as a blinded, read-only PDF file. The PDF files can be read using Adobe Reader (free software for viewing and printing PDF files, which may be downloaded free at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html).

This is a confidential review process and use of the electronic manuscript file is restricted: it is not to be distributed for any purpose other than the requested review. A reminder to this effect appears on every page of the blinded manuscript that is e-mailed to the reviewer.

For those reviewers who wish to send their materials via regular mail, please use the address listed below. Reviewers submitting via regular mail are asked to print out and complete the Confidential Report to the Editor form and the Comments to the Author(s) form and submit it with five (5) copies of their Comments to the Author(s) to the following address:
