RE:           2005 Program Organizing Information

Now that the 2004 Annual Meeting is over, this office is taking a moment to focus on next year's Annual Meeting. I would like to take this opportunity to let you know what is needed from sections for upcoming program deadlines.

2005 Call for Papers: The complete Call for Papers will be posted on the ASA website this fall and also mailed as a separate booklet directly to all members. The deadline for Call for Papers information is in mid-September. Please submit your session planning information for 2005 by September 15, 2004. This deadline is very important as it will be your primary opportunity to notify the entire membership about your Section's open submission sessions for 2005.

If your section is planning any closed/invited sessions, please be sure to indicate those when submitting program plans for 2005. Otherwise, it is assumed that section sessions are open for general paper submissions.

Your program planning information should include the name and contact information (mailing address, office telephone number, e-mail address) for the organizer of each session. All paper submissions for 2005 must be made via the online submission system, so please note that all section session organizers must have e-mail and good web access in order to accomplish their tasks.

2005 Session Allocations: The allocation of time slots for 2005 section program sessions will be based on section membership counts when the ASA membership year closes on September 30, 2004. For your information, a membership report run today is enclosed. You will note that allocations for some sections are currently below last year's figures. Inasmuch as overall membership in ASA is higher than at this time last year, it seems likely that these sections need to concentrate on some renewal encouragement to former section members and/or recruitment of new members.

2005 Program Deadlines: Please be aware that Section submission deadlines must remain consistent with ASA deadlines. All paper submissions must be made online by January 15, 2005. The revised Guidelines for Annual Meeting Session Organizers, which contains session deadlines and other instructions for organizers, will be sent to each Section Chair, program chair, and session organizer later this fall.
