The American Sociological Association assists sociologists and prospective employers by sponsoring an Employment Service during each year’s Annual Meeting. This service augments the monthly Employment Bulletin, now available in print and online as part of ASA’s home page. During the Annual Meeting in Atlanta last year, 63 employers listed 85 positions, including 7 openings outside academia and 3 post-doctoral opportunities. 321 candidates registered with the service, and 1,089 interviews were scheduled.

Location and Hours. The 2004 Employment Service will be located at the Hilton San Francisco and open during the following hours:

  • Friday, August 13 - 1:30-5:30 p.m.

  • Saturday, August 14 - 8:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

  • Sunday, August 15 - 8:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

  • Monday, August 16 - 8:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

  • Tuesday, August 17 - 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

  • Fees. To register for the Employment Service, users must fill out and submit the Annual Meeting registration form AND the appropriate Employment Service form. Anyone using this service must be a paid registrant for the Annual Meeting. Annual Meeting registration fees are listed under General Registration information. Employment Service fees are:

  • Employers $150

  • Candidates $25 (ASA Members); $50 (Non-Members)

  • All employer listings must be prepaid (a valid purchase order will be accepted); post-meeting billing is not available.

Service Forms. Forms for listing positions (Employer Form) and applications for individuals (Candidate Profile Form) may be downloaded from this website. Copies will also be printed in the May and June issues of the Employment Bulletin and the May/June issue of Footnotes. Please note that both forms are limited to one side of one page. Fill out the pertinent service form and return it with your meeting registration form and appropriate payment.

PLEASE NOTE: If you opt to register online, please note that filling out and submitting your service form is a separate offline step. Your service registration will not be complete until the employer or candidate form is received by ASA Meeting Services and all fees are paid.

Form Submission. Employer and Candidate forms are printed in the May and June issues of the Employment Bulletin, the May/June issue of Footnotes, and also posted on this website as pdf files that can be downloaded and saved for local printing and filling out. Users with full Adobe Acrobat software may be able to insert their data directly into the locally saved form. If a Word version of a form is desired, please contact meetings@asanet.org.

If you preregister by mail or fax, please send all your registration materials to the address listed on the meeting registration form. If you prefer to preregister and pay fees online, step two of your service registration is to submit your completed employer or candidate form to: ASA Meeting Services, 1307 New York Avenue NW, Suite 700, Washington, DC 20007; fax 202-638-0882; or meetings@asanet.org.

PLEASE NOTE: You will need the full version of Adobe Acrobat in order to save and/email the form with data.

Service Deadlines. Users of the Employment Service should note the following deadlines which support advance exchange of information between candidates and employers. Forms completed after the published deadline dates should not be sent to the ASA Executive Office; these forms should be brought on-site at the Annual Meeting to be processed.

    CANDIDATES

July 1: To have your profile included in the advance mailing to employers, the candidate registration forms (meeting registration and candidate profile form) and payment must be received by July 1.

Meeting registration is defined as payment of general registration fees and Employment Service registration fees. Candidate profiles received after July 1 will not be included in the advance mailing; they will be supplied to employers on-site in San Francisco after candidates have signed in at Candidate Registration. No profiles will be activated unless payment has been received for meeting registration and the Employment Service fee.

    EMPLOYERS

July 8: To receive the advance mailing of preregistered candidate profiles, the employer registration forms (meeting registration and position listing) and payment must be received by July 8.

The advance mailing allows interviewers to review candidate information prior to arrival at the meeting site and speeds the process of setting up screening interviews with the Service on-site. Employers who register after July 8 will receive the candidate book when they arrive in San Francisco. No listing will be activated unless payment has been received for meeting registration and the Employment Service fee.

Preregistration Deadline. Service users who wish to be included in the advance mailing to employers should preregister before the end of June; see above “Service Deadlines” for clarification. Materials submitted by those who preregister after the announced service deadlines will be distributed only when the service opens on-site in San Francisco. All Annual Meeting preregistration processes close on July 19. After that date, service users must register in San Francisco at on-site rates.

Processes. Facilities will be available at the Hilton San Francisco for reviewing position listings, exchanging messages, and interviewing. All initial interview appointments are to be scheduled through the Employment Service at the meeting site. Position listings supplied by preregistered employers will be available for viewing by candidates when the Service opens on Friday afternoon, August 13. Listings supplied by employers who register on-site will be posted as listings are received and processed.

Preregistered candidates should first pick up their name badges and program packets at the ASA Preregistration desk in Yosemite Hall, then report to the Plaza A Room on the lobby level of the Hilton San Francisco. Do this as soon as possible after arrival in San Francisco to activate your candidate profile, indicate your availability for interview, and deliver two copies, three-hole punched, of your full resume/vita to the Service. These resumes will be used to create two supplemental resume reference books for use by registered employers during the meeting.

For candidates unable to preregister, your first step on-site in San Francisco is to register for the Annual Meeting, then proceed to the Employment Service to fill out the necessary paperwork and start the required processing.

Preregistered candidates should report to the Imperial Ballroom at the Hilton San Francisco as soon as possible after arrival into the city to activate their candidate profiles, indicate their availability for interviews, and deliver two copies, three-hole punched, of their complete resumes to the Service. These resumes will be used to create two supplemental resume reference books for use by registered employers during the meeting. For candidates unable to preregister, it is recommended that you visit the Employment Service as early as possible upon arriving at the meeting site in order to start the required processing.

Interview Scheduling. All initial interview appointments are to be scheduled through the Employment Service at the meeting site. Since employers need some time to review profiles, there will be a lag time between on-site activation of a candidate file and the scheduling of interviews. Because of this processing/review time, those intending to make full use of the service should preregister no later than July 1 and make sure to pick up their meeting registration packet and report to the Employment Service area in San Francisco by 5:00 p.m. on August 14 to activate their files. No new candidate files will be activated on the last day of Employment Service operations (Tuesday, August 17).
